Anton Corbijn
At least since photographer Anton Corbijn is in charge of the advertising camapaigns of jeans brand G-Star, the Dutchman is back on the map: his distinctive black and white images decorate our inner cities. Being a filmmaker as well, Corbijn renownedly gives fascinating insights into singular personalities in moving images and steady portraits. Apart from striking photographs of true music legends such as Bruce Springsteen, Patti Smith or Tom Waits, who have always fascinated Corbijn, the photographer has focussed in his recent work on modern personifications of artistic inspiration such as Marlene Dumas, Gilbert & George or Jeff Koons. He made Kate Moss waer a mask that creates a paradox. While it destroys the models persona created by the media and calls attention to the real person rather than the construct, it also works as a symbol for the interplay between the sacrifice of privacy and its protection. His 2007 movie “Control” depicts the life of Ian Curtis as a family man and a musician of the band “Joy Division.” As opposed to this, his latest movie “Inside Out” zeros in on himself.

Red Bull Music Academy
Red Bull is known for their involvement in (extreme) sports, ranging from skateboarding to iceskating (not the fancy kind) & air races to their own Formula 1 team. What many people don’t know is Red Bull’s deep involvement in the music scene. The company has been contributing to the music scene for nearly 15 years: whereas companies like Pepsi throw wads of cash at the likes of Michael Jackson, Madonna and most recently signed a multi million dollar endorsement deal with Nicki Minaj, Red Bull takes an entirely different and unique approach: the Red Bull Music Academy.
The Red Bull Music Academy is a world-travelling series of music workshops and festivals and invites 60 music enthusiasts worldwide to a new city each year to come together for two weeks worth of recording sessions, lectures by musical luminaries, and unforgettable late night jams. Cities like Madrid, Berlin, London, Capetown and São Paulo. The lucky ones that are selected for 2012′s Academy will be shipped to no other than New York.
I had the good fortune to participate myself in the Academy of ’08 in Barcelona where I had the opportunity to collaborate with Jamie Woon amongst others. Other former participants include Flying Lotus, Aloe Blacc, Hudson Mohawke, Dorian Concept, Black Coffee, Jesse Boykins III and Katy B (who now stars in a Olympics commercial with Marc Ronson for Coca Cola ironically). The long list of lecturers include illustrious names like Erykah Badu, Nile Rodgers, ?uestlove, A-Trak, Biz Markie, Tony Allen, Gilles Peterson, Leroy Burgess, Busy P & Leon Ware to name but a few.
Over the years Red Bull has collected a vast amount of lecture videos which can all be seen on the website, as well as an even bigger collection of radioshows which actually deserves its own website: Red Bull Music Academy Radio.
As a former participant I was delighted to find that after London, Los Angeles, Auckland and Capetown, Red Bull has now opened a permanent studio in Amsterdam. If you have an idea, a sample of your own music and a proper motivation as to why you want to record/produce in the Red Bull Studio, all you have to do is apply via the website (dutch only).

Louis Vuitton Bag Charms

For the release of Louis Vuitton’s new elegant Hot Air Balloon Bag Charm, Part of a Bigger Plan has created and produced a short animation to be shown on Louis Vuitton’s new web platform, New Now. The film follows the little collectable Bag Charm on an adventurous journey. A miniature version of the monogram trunk is suspended from the hot air balloon. The balloon is seen wandering through an unknown and ancient world in search of its home. Watch the video at Louis Vuitton’s New Now web platform.

ILLUMINATI AMSTERDAM
Illuminati AMS is a multi-talented, Amsterdam-based, formation made up of two producers, DeMikey and Jaziah, and performers Nianga Niang and Naleye Junior.
In terms of music production, Illuminati’s productions bridge the gap between diverse musical genres, creating a chameleon-like signature: “Wan gwan?!”
Since all of them additionally have a background in (high) fashion, their recent Gung Ho video-concept ooses ‘The Illuminati AMS Experience” magic throughout each video frame.
Be it expression through music, performance, style, art, photos, videos (or anything else they can get their hands on) one thing is certain: wherever they go, Illuminati AMS radiate a contagious energy that will turn their surroundings into a mystical experience. They are the enlightened ones, don’t forget!

Music Video + Styling: Cee-Lo Green’s “Falling” – Shot in Amsterdam
Cee-Lo Green’s new track ‘Falling’ is to be released any minute now, and guess what?! The video was made on Dutch-soil with an entire homebased crew! (We’re proud!) Shot by photographer/director Wouter Vandenbrink and styled by Sonny Groo, the video is a fast-paced chase scene filmed from the viewpoint of the pursued.
Inspired by music videos from the 80s and 90s (think Janet Jackson’s ‘Control’, the movie ‘The Warriors’ and Gregg Araki) the actors were actually cast based on their own exceptional sense of style, which Sonny Groo then adapted to visually fit the feel and look of the video.
The video is to be released this week, and will unveil the identity of who (or what) are chasing the stylishly black-clad men.
