The fact that the modelling world is anything but sweet and innocent is nothing new, but the documentary Girl Model sheds light on a particularly unglamorous aspect of the business. David Redmond and former model Ashley Sabin show how model scouts comb the streets of poverty-stricken Siberia, looking for extremely young and naïve girls for the Japanese market. Ashley’s personal experiences as a model and her ever-increasing despair over the scouting world are contrasted with the humiliating experiences of the ambitious 13-year-old Nadya Vall in Tokyo. It is anything but a ‘pretty picture’, but still a must-see film for all those working in the fashion industry. Girl Model was shown briefly at last year’s IDFA and will run in various Dutch cinemas starting 12 July.
