Meet the new favourite artist of many Fashionistas, Dutch high-society and art-lovers: fashion illustrator Nicolaas Gerritsen (28, Amsterdam). His highly recognizable uber futuristic, giant couture aliens wear huge reflective glasses and ‘Daft Punk-style’ helmets.

Nicolaas Gerritsen was educated as a fashion designer and has shown three times during Amsterdam Fashion Week. During his academic years at (not the least) the Amsterdam Fashion Institute, Gerrit Rietveld Academy and ArtEZ Arnhem, he had to put up with low grades in fashion drawing, until he rigorously decided to boycott everything that he found annoying to draw: women’s ears, noses, eyes, mouths and hands. This resulted in gigantic ornamental dresses, long slender arms and elegant hands. Nature, art and architecture are leading in his large pencil drawings, often characterized by endlessly repeating flowing shapes and lines.

Nicolaas is now illustrating for De Bijenkorf as well as for Shoebaloo, where he is also part of the creative heart. In honour of VOGUE Fashion’s Night Out, Nicolaas designed a spectacular illustration. Shoebaloo gave away (signed, numbered and framed) prints to the first 25 buying customers of this special evening.

In the spring of 2013, he will have his first solo exhibition.
