Amsterdam Light Festival brings together visitors and artists from all over the world in the dark winter period. By exhibiting high-quality and innovative light art in the public space, the festival aims to involve, inspire and enlighten its visitors, artists and partners.
THE MEDIUM IS THE MESSAGE
This year's theme is ‘The Medium is the Message’, the famous statement by the Canadian scientist Marshall McLuhan. The role of light in conveying a message and the city of Amsterdam as a medium for telling stories are central to this edition.
Art historian and chief editor of the magazine Ons Amsterdam Koen Kleijn did research and collected them in a ten-part series. The artworks will show you the history, architecture and extraordinary inhabitants of Amsterdam.
Dive into the stories of the breweries, the old street lighting, the international trade house Bartolotti and the golden bend and let this eye-catching festival fascinate you.
FOLLOW THE LIGHTS
Follow a route by boat for an unforgettable experience. The light of the artworks form magical reflections on the water and in some cases, on buildings. You can also opt for a tour by foot or by bike. There is a possibility to do a guided or audio tour that will shine more light on the theme, the artworks and their makers.
